Football Calendar
February 3 – April 15
The "Quiet" Period.

  • No coach interaction off campus
  • Prospective athletes may visit colleges at their own expense
  • Offers may, or may not, be received based on junior year video
  • Athletes should begin mailing their highlight videos
  • Start the registration process for both the SAT and ACT tests (juniors)
Communication:
  • No telephone calls from coaches are allowed
  • Written/Electronic Communication is permitted

April 15 – May 31
The "Evaluation" Period usually occurs during spring training.

  • Coaches are allowed to see athletes off campus
  • Coaches may come and observe workouts
  • Offers may, or may not, be received based on personal observation
Communication:
  • No direct contact with the prospect is allowed
  • Coaches can talk to high school coaches and counselors
  • One phone call to the school to talk with the prospect is permitted

June 1 – August 30
The "summer" months are used for camps and combines.

  • The decision between Mini-camps vs. Multiple-Day camps
  • The decision between College camps vs. Private Day camps
  • Attend camps where the college has interest in you
  • Juniors should go on their own expense and visit schools
Communication:
  • No summer phone calls allowed by college coaches
  • Be proactive and asks coaches at camps about your performance (get feedback)

September 1 – November 30
The "Evaluation" period creates opportunities.

  • 90 percent of evaluation is on video tapes
  • After interest is shown by coaches, they want game tapes
  • By October 1, coaches need a new game tape
  • Athletes need to have great games early in the season
Use this time to make as many "Unofficial Visits" as possible.
  • Balance your schedule and try to target schools that have interest in you
  • Visit a variety of schools (level of competition, size, and location)
  • Be sure and make face-to-face eye contact with coaches (firm hand shake, smile, and be informed on the school’s performance)
Communication:
  • Telephone phone calls to the school for one week is allowed
  • All written forms of communication is permitted (emails, letters, and text messages)
  • Be proactive and respond to all inquires
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions

December 1 – February 1
Majority of communication goes on during this period.

  • Prospects can receive phone calls from college coaches
  • Coaches can come visit athletes at school
  • Coaches can also visit a prospect at home
"Official" Visits
  • Schools pay for the athlete to come and visit for 48 hours
  • Schools are only allotted money for 56 players to visit
  • Athletes are usually given a tour of school and taken out later in the evening
  • Athletes are chauffeured by students working for athletic dept. or team players
  • Athletes are allowed only five "official" visits
"Decision Time"
  • Verbal commitments are not a guarantee, but they show genuine interest an athlete
  • When given an offer, applying to the school and receiving acceptance is important
  • Apply to as many schools as possible to leave options on the table
  • An athlete should not accept a scholarship if they really do not want to attend the university
